Yellow Medicine County is along the wester border of Minnesota and its eastern border is formed by the Minnesota River. As of the 2010 US Census, the population was 10,438.The county seat is Granite Falls. The Upper Sioux Indian Reservation is located in the county. The county was founded in 1971 and is named for the Yellow Medicine River or a yellow root used by the Dakota people for medicinal purposes.

Yellow Medicine County is governed by five county commissioners. It is organized by a county administrator.
