Douglas County in Southeastern MN had a population of 36,009 based on the 2010 census. The county seat is named Alexandria. The county was first established in 1858 and got organized in 1866. It was named after Stephen Douglas from Illinois. The Alexandria Lakes is found in Douglas County, which is the only grape appellation in Minnesota. The County’s total area is 637 square miles.

Details: On October 14, 2017 at about 1:20 PM the Douglas County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call about a possible structure fire at 6536 County Road 82 NW near Garfield. The Garfield Fire Chief confirmed the fire a short time later and requested mutal aid from the Brandon and Alexandria Fire Departments. However, they were later cancelled. A deputy arrived on scene and located a burning woodpile against the house. The deputy used his fire extinguisher to knock it down and it was put out by Garfield Fire. The fire caused exterior damage to the house and interior smoke damage. The homeowner arrived on scene after getting called at work about the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office, the Garfield Fire Department and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. North Ambulance responded to the scene as a precaution.

On 10/10/17 at 1521 hours the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a vehicle versus ATV crash on Co Rd 25 SW. The crash occurred near the Boxelder Dr SW/Co Rd 25 SW intersection. Larry Habben was driving a 1992 Dodge Dakota and collided with Phillip Koehntop who was operating a 2016 Honda ATV. Larry was not injured. Phillip sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to the St. Cloud Hospital. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by North Ambulance, Kensington First Responders, Hoffman Ambulance and First Responders, Grant County Sheriff’s Office, MN State Patrol, and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The crash remains under investigation.

Phillip Koehntop died as a result of his injuries. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office is conducting an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
