Fillmore County is located in the state of Minnesota; the county was formed in March 5, 1853 and named after Millard Fillmore the thirteenth President of the United States. In 1860 Fillmore was the most populous county in Minnesota. Spring Valley is the largest city in the county while Preston is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 20,866 people and a total area of 862 square miles, of which 0.8 square miles (0.09%) is water and 861 square miles is land. Fillmore County borders the following counties: Winona County to the northeast, Houston County to the east, Winneshiek County, Iowa to the southeast, Howard County, Iowa to the southwest, Mower County to the west and Olmsted County to the northwest.
