Dakota County is located in the state of Minnesota; it was formed in October 27, 1849 and named after the Dakota Sioux tribal bands who settled in the area. The name is recorded as “Dahkotah” in the United States Census records until 1851. Eagan is the largest city in the county while Hastings is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 398,552 people and a total area of 587 square miles (1,520 km2), of which 25 square miles (65 km2) (4.2%) is water and 562 square miles (1,460 km2) is land. This makes the Dakota the third-most populous county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The county has a number of cities which include: Apple Valley, Burnsville, Coates, Eagan, Farmington, Hampton, Hastings (partly in Washington County), Inver Grove Heights, Lakeville, Lilydale, Mendota, Mendota Heights, Miesville, New Trie, Northfield (mostly in Rice County), Randolph, Rosemount, South St. Paul, Sunfish Lake, Vermillion and West St. Paul. The county has two ghost towns: Lewiston and Nininger.

Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge and Mississippi National River and Recreation Area are the only National protected areas in the county.
