Cottonwood County is located in the state of Minnesota; the county was formed in 1857 and organized in 1870. Cottonwood was named after Cottonwood River. Windom is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 11,687 people and a total area of 649 square miles (1,680 km2), of which 10 square miles (26 km2) (1.5%) is water and 639 square miles (1,660 km2) is land. The county has a number of cities which include: Bingham Lake, Comfrey (partial), Jeffers, Mountain Lake, Storden, Windom (county seat) and Westbrook.
Cottonwood County borders the following counties; Redwood County to the north, Brown County to the northeast, Watonwan County to the east, Martin County to the southeast, Jackson County to the south, Nobles County to the southwest and Murray County to the west. Major highways in the county include: U.S. Highway 71, Minnesota State Highway 30, Minnesota State Highway 60 and Minnesota State Highway 62.
