Big Stone County is located in the state of Minnesota; the county was formed in 1862 and organized in 1874. Ortonville is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 5,369 people and a total area of 528 square miles (1,370 km2), of which 29 square miles (75 km2) (5.5%) is water and 499 square miles (1,290 km2) is land. The county has a number of cities which include:  Barry, Beardsley, Clinton, Correll, Graceville, Johnson, Odessa and Ortonville. Unincorporated communities in the county are Foster and Yankeetown.

Big Stone County borders the following counties: Traverse County, Minnesota  to the north, Stevens County, Minnesota to the northeast, Swift County, Minnesota to the southeast, Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota to the south, Grant County, South Dakota to the southwest and Roberts County, South Dakota to the northwest. The county has four major highways which include:  U.S. Highway 12, U.S. Highway 75, Minnesota State Highway 7 and Minnesota State Highway 28. Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge is the only National protected area in the county.
