Aitkin County is located in the state of Minnesota; the county was created in 1857 and organized in 1871. A portion of the Mille Lacs Indian Reservation is in the county. Aitkin is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 16,202 and a total area of 1,995 square miles (5,170 km2), of which 174 square miles (450 km2) (8.7%) is water and 1,822 square miles (4,720 km2) is land. Cities in the county include Aitkin, Hill City, McGrath, McGregor, Palisade and Tamarack.
Aitkin County borders the following counties: Itasca County to the north, Saint Louis County to the northeast, Carlton County to the east, Pine County to the southeast, Kanabec County to the south, Mille Lacs County to the south, Crow Wing County to the southwest and Cass County to the northwest. Major highways that pass through the county include U.S. Highway 169, Minnesota State Highway 18, Minnesota State Highway 47, Minnesota State Highway 65, Minnesota State Highway 200, Minnesota State Highway 210 and Minnesota State Highway 232. The only state protected area in the county is Savanna Portage State Park.
