The Saint Paul Police Department is a full service agency with a force of approximately 800 employees, including more than 600 sworn officers. In 2013, the department responded to 270,000 calls for service and further investigated more than 13,000 Part I crimes.  The department has a number of divisions which include Support Services & Administration, Major Crimes Division, Operations Division, Special Investigations Unit (S.I.U.), Internal Affairs Division, Patrol Division and Records Division.

The Saint Paul Police Department is headed by Tom Smith who is the chief of police and oversees all department operations. He was appointed as Chief in 2010 and is a lifelong resident of Saint Paul.
